The 143 boathouses on Stuntz Bay, Lake Vermillion are part of the Historic District in Soudan, Minnesota. Originally the land was owned by Oliver Mining Company when it began operations at the Soudan Iron Mine. To reward the employees, the company gave each employee who wanted a boathouse on the lake, property and scraped mining materials to build the boathouses.
Today you can visit the mine and the boathouses for glimpse into Minnesota's Iron Mining past.
